Egyptian Wheat (Shallu)
Egyptian Wheat, also called "Chicken Corn," belongs to the sorghum family. It is excellent as feed and cover for birds. The plants are leafy and have some forage value. It is well adapted to high humidity. The seed heads are large, creamy white, brittle but not hard, high in protein and shatters freely when mature. It shades birds that scratch and feed off the fallen seed. Plant 10 to 15 pounds per acre 3/4" deep April to July. It matures in 90 to 105 days. It is a heavy nitrogen user so fertilize well.
