- Velvet Beans
- Plant 1/4 - 1/2 acre plots in woods or around the edge of woods in corn or sorghum. Deer really love them. Plant 12 to 15 pounds per acre March through June. (see February 1998 issue of Progressive Farmer by Glen Robertson) Auburn University thinks this is the crop of the future. Used in rotation, it has doubled the yield on peanuts. It helps control nematodes and also suppresses weeds, diseases and insects. This crop has been grown for over 150 years and today is thought of as the crop of the future. Reports are that peanut yields increase 122% when peanuts follow velvet beans. Studies show that Velvet Beans planted in April and then Soybeans planted 2 months later will provide some nematode control.
- Vetch, Hairy
- hairy Vetch is an annual legume and is good for all wildlife. Plant 15 to 20 pounds per acre August through December. It does well when used in mixtures. It is good to use on land to be planted in cotton. It has a high residue that stands on top of soil longer than rye.
